Random Thoughts 2025 and Beyond
Well, I finally figured out where you all were, so I'm here now too!
Since Rolltide isn't here, I'm stealing his thread name.....I'll use this thread to post my thoughts and keep things I'd like to be able to reference.
Glad to see we still have a place to gather and discuss!
Here's a random thought, Everything in the series, the book, and the poem, seems to be about the past. The fifth verse of the poem. Truth rests not in clever minds, "Not in tangled twisted finds" Justin has a lot of interests, in archeology tangled twisted finds are useless, they look for well defined layers of the past.
hey Rah! glad you found us but I've got to say that it's not the same.
Are the old times really over for good?

Hi RahRah and Mountain Digger- I found my way back as well! Are you guys doing Justin's hunt?

Certainly seems like things over here are fairly dead wrt the chase, which is sad 😥 - I'll still post my stuff here since I like having somewhere to post now and then. I wish they'd made an archive of the old THOR - doing so wouldn't have been that onerous, but what do I know? It seems a lot of the Fenn stuff is being methodically removed across the internet.....hmmmmmmm

What's that from?
Justin's hunt, The first item he put into the treasure, was a frame of arrow heads.
Hi Goldilocks! It's been a long time and I hope all is well with you.
I've not taken up Justin's hunt and have no plans to. I do wish all who have the best in finding Justin's treasure ... but I'm glad to see rahrah's thread dedicated to continue the sharing of thoughts on ff's Chase.

Things to think about....
Begin it where warm waters halt,
Warm waters are those between freezing and boiling, they halt when freezing or boiling
And take it in the canyon down,
When you "take it in" you assess something, so assessing a canyon down means to assess the height/depth from above where are are standing, it could be said to be fair in height (fahrenheit)
Not far, but too far to walk.
He then tells us it is NOT far, so not fahrenheit, but too far to walk - centigrade - which means, literally 100 steps
So initally you have the fahrenheit temperatures - 32 to 212
But you have to go to the centrigrade/celcius temperatures - 0 to 100 are the freezing point and boiling point
The word centigrade would be his natural word to use given his age, and because "Celsius" is commonly used in scientific work, but "centigrade" is still used in French and English-speaking countries, especially in informal contexts. The frequency of the usage of "centigrade" has declined over time though.
@rahrah We need to remember that Forrest said that his mind liked to stay at 15. Lets take no paddle up your creek, as an example. Well most people knew that meant, you were up s##t creek, why s##t creek, because the water stunk. It was probably the out flow from a sulfur spring. And his one room cabin in PARADISE, with outside plumbing. To a 15 year old that could have been the home of brown, whether or not it was capitalized. Just saying. Word smiths are a real tricky bunch.
IMO - "paddle" when used figuratively, WILL give you a direct location that leads to the end.
"Alone" is another word...but only semi-key.. lol
@jpsaxnc he did tell us his mind stays at about age 13 on p. 6 of TTOTC (not 15).
Also, when he talks about winning an award for TTOTC he said a PHD wrote him a letter and and said the book was childish. His response was yes, because "a 13 year old kid wrote it".
@rahrah I just think the kid idea just gives us a different perspective on the poem and the hiding place. If you watched the Gold and Greed series, did you notice when Justin opened the chest and took out the key. The key was in pristine condition when it was placed in the chest. When Justin took the key out it was heavily corroded, as well as a pair of scissors that were made from steel. The iron and steel were exposed to sulfur dioxide gas, which breaks down into sulfuric acid. The chest had most likely been hidden near a sulfur spring.
When I got Forrest's book, I immediately crossed Wyoming off the list of places to search. Because Forrest had said that there were "subtle clues" sprinkled among the pages. When I saw an entire chapter on Wyoming, there was nothing subtle about that. It wasn't until near the end of the hunt, that I decided to look at Wyoming, because everyone seemed to be going there. In my solve I had warm waters and the home of Brown, both being the same place. Because there was nothing in the poem that said they couldn't be. It just depended on how you read the poem.
